Can a Chiropractor Fix Headaches?

Did you know that there are over 120 types of headaches?

“There are many different types of headaches, and their causes and symptoms can vary. Although most are short-lived and rarely a cause for concern, being able to recognize which kind of headache a person is experiencing can inform them how best to treat it and whether to see a doctor.”Source

Here at Peak Chiropractic Tauranga, the main types we commonly see in our office are migraines, sinus, TMJ, tension type, cluster and cervicogenic (neck) headaches.

We view headaches as a secondary condition, which means that they must stem from a primary condition. Our job is to discover what that primary condition is – a structural shift in your spine? Dehydration? Nutrition? Injury?

Once we have determined this we can advise you of your best plan of action. If your headaches are caused by issues with your spine and muscoskeletal system, chiropractors can often fix headaches.

With this in mind, the answer to the question “can a chiropractor fix headaches?” is not quite a straightforward answer. It depends upon the type of headache and the root cause of discomfort…

So what’s the difference between the various types of headaches?

Migraines are a severe headache originating from changes in the brain. Migraines may also be associated with sensitivity to light or sound, nausea and vomiting as well as eye pain. The pain is often one sided, pounding, made worse with physical activity and can last from several hours to days!

A tension headache is a milder/moderate bilateral tightness – there is no associated sensitivity to light, sound, smell as well as no nausea or vomiting. Typically, they occur as a result of stress – physical or emotional.

Cervicogenic headaches are typically dull and originate from the neck/base of head. They can affect the temple, forehead, back or top regions of the head.

Sinus Headaches: these are mild to moderate deep aching pains felt from the cheeks to the forehead, associated with sinus infections.

Chiropractic care provides a natural solution for practically all headache types. It addresses the cause of these headaches and not just the symptoms. The symptoms are eliminated when the cause is addressed and often no other headache pain relief is needed.
